Often overlooked because of the state’s namesake city, Albany, New York is a beautiful city with a rich historical past. The city’s charter is the nation’s oldest active charter -- dating to 1686! In fact, it was in Albany where Benjamin Franklin first introduced the idea of uniting the States into a union, with the "Albany Plan of Union." But Albany's rich history isn't where the story ends. Albany blends old and new effortlessly, it's this blend which draws tourists to visit each year.

EscapeWizard.com invites you to book your next trip to Albany, NY, the beautiful capital of New York State. The city can be accessed by Albany International Airport (ALB). Located less than 10 miles from downtown, the airport is very convenient for travelers. EscapeWizard.com suggests you start your tour at the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza -- or as locals call it, the "Empire Plaza" or "South Mall." The plaza is surrounded by a collection of skyscrapers and government buildings -- but most noticeable is “the Egg.” Now a recognizable part of the city's skyline, "the Egg" was constructed between the '60' and '70's. This uniquely shaped building, which accurately reflects its name, houses two amphitheatres and is the city's Center for the Performing Arts. The center attracts a variety of performances year round. EscapeWizard.com recommends seeing a show at this unique theatre while you're in town. In a corner of the plaza is the Corning Tower Observation deck. It's certainly worth the trip up the elevator. The deck offers a full view of all of Albany – enjoy a birds-eye view of the Governor's Mansion or glaze out into the Catskills. EscapeWizard.com can guarantee you'll enjoy this sight!

From the Corning Tower, leave the plaza and take a quick walk down Madison Avenue and make a right onto Eagle Street to see the Governor's mansion. This beautiful Queen Anne style building has evolved since its inception, but architectural buffs and novices alike will appreciate the Italianate and Second Empire influences on this building. It has been home to 31 governors and their families since 1875 -- three of which later became presidents.  Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt all lived in the mansion before moving to the White House.

On the other side of the plaza is the New York State Capitol Building. A grand structure combining Romanesque Revival and Neo-Renaissance architecture, this building looks more like a castle than a capitol! A vaulted ceiling inside is reminiscent of a cathedral. EscapeWizard.com recommends scheduling a tour of this magnificent building. Most can be scheduled through state Assembly members or the Office of General Service.

Albany also offers a vibrant nightlife in mid-town, which includes the neighborhoods of Center Square, Hudson/Park, Lark Street, and Washington Park. Mid-town offers unique shops and wonderful restaurants during the day, but also is home to some of the city's best bars and nightclubs. There are also some good hot spots to check-out that are closer to the Hudson River.

If you visit in the summer, EscapeWizard.com recommends enjoying some of the attractions on the riverfront. Boat rides and cruises are offered, and there is an amphitheatre that is likely to be hosting a lively performance if it's a warm weekend!

EscapeWizard.com encourages you to visit Albany, NY. There are plenty of options for getting around. Hitch a ride on the Albany Trolley for a historic tour, grab a taxi or hop on one of the public buses. In the summer make sure you treat yourself to a ride on the river in one of the local "Ducks boats" or cruises. This city will surely be a treat for everyone -- from the amateur historian, to the art inclined -- and anyone looking for a fun time in a unique city.
