Being the home of the Wright brothers, and the true birthplace of aviation, Dayton’s foremost tourist attraction would have to be its National Museum of the US Air Force. Home to over 400 aerospace vehicles, it is one of the world’s largest aviation museums. For the aviation enthusiast there is also the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, a complex that includes the Wright Cycle Company building, which was, from 1895 to 1897, the fourth of five locations for their bicycle business. Just minutes away at Carillon Historical Park is the John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center, which houses an original 1905 Wright Flyer III, considered the world’s first practical airplane. Carillon Park also has 25 historical buildings celebrating Dayton’s history of industrialism and innovation, with artifacts including Dayton-made cash registers, vintage automobiles, train cars & bicycles, a 1930s print shop and the largest carillon in Ohio.

For those for whom aviation heritage is not their thing, there are a plethora of other museums to check out including, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, home to the Miami Valley’s only public planetarium, offering daily astronomy and laser shows. The Dayton International Peace Museum, honoring Dayton's history as the center for the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, offers exhibits, events and educational initiatives ‘focused on bringing peace and the ways to peace into the public consciousness’. Sunwatch Indian Village is a 13th century American Indian village excavated between 1971 and 1988, along the Great Miami River, and features a partial reconstruction of the village and a museum/interpretive center. America's Packard Museum is ‘the world's only restored Packard Dealership operating as a museum, and only full-time museum dedicated exclusively to the Packard Motor Car Company, its products and philosophies’. Lastly, the Dayton Art Institute, a true Dayton landmark, is a top-notch art museum featuring a diverse permanent collection, from modern to ancient and world class special exhibitions.

If you’re looking to take in some form of the performing arts, then you might check out the Schuster Center, or its across-the-street-counterpart the Victoria Theatre, both offering a constant rotation of ballet, opera and theatre.

For baseball fans, the Dayton Dragon’s Fifth Third Field has been rated among the top 25 minor league parks in the country. A fairly large park, Fifth Third Field is actually larger than that of many AAA clubs. Located on the edge of downtown, it makes for a great place to catch a mid-summer night’s game.

Just down the street from the ballpark is Riverscape Metropark. Located along the Great Miami River, Riverscape plays host to a full range of events and activities including pedal boats, concerts and festivals during the summer, and offers ice-skating during the winter months.

If you enjoy shopping, The Greene is an outdoor shopping complex, offering over 60 retail shops, about 25 restaurants and cafes, a handful of bars and even a comedy club.

If it’s nightlife that you are interested in, then you want to head to the Oregon District, where, on the edge of downtown, E. 5th Street turns into five blocks of restaurants, bars and shops. Choose from five star restaurants like Thai 9 or Jay’s Seafood, to a burger and fries at any one of the bars along the strip. Stop in the record shop on one end, the independent bookstore on the other, and peruse the vintage clothing and other oddities in between.  The Trolley Stop, Blind Bob’s and the Oregon Express offer live music on the weekends, and Joker’s comedy club is known to book some hilarious acts, including the occasional performance by local favorite Dave Chappelle.

Indeed, Dayton has a bit of something for everyone; museums, performing arts, baseball, shopping, fine dining, drinks and live music.
