Dover, Delaware has been the capital of the first state since 1777. Today Dover's rich history is still evident downtown. There are also a variety of other activities to enjoy while you're in the area. Dover is a wonderful place to stop in for a visit during your next vacation on the East Coast.

EscapeWizard.com invites you to see Dover for yourself! The city is located in the center of the state of Delaware. The closest airport is the Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY) in Salisbury, Maryland. But Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are also a moderate drive away. EscapeWizard.com suggests you start your tour in downtown Dover. The government is the largest employer in the area, so it makes sense to take a look at what it has to offer! EscapeWizard.com suggests you head to the Old State House for a tour. The building was recently renovated to reflect the time period in which it was built. Outside it reflects the Georgian architecture that was popular during the late 1700's. It was first used as the State House in 1791. Inside visitors can see the an 18th century-style courtroom and the restored former chambers of the legislature. The architecture is impressive, and there are wonderful works of art throughout the building. The assembly continued to meet in this building until 1933.

Right around the corner from the State House is the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center. This center is a nice place to re-group and decide what you'd like to see next. Delaware's State House called Legislative Hall is right around the corner, and a short distance away is the Woodburn and Hall House -- where the Governor lives. There are many touring times available for Legislative Hall, but be sure to plan in advance if you'd like to go inside the Governor's house, as tours are very limited. The Delaware Public Archives are also in the area and are a fun place for history buffs to spend an afternoon. All of these attractions are located downtown around The Green, so if the weather is nice, you might enjoy a picnic between activities. A good place for this would be on the mall area where you can take in monuments like the Delaware Law Enforcement Memorial, the Compass Rose, or the Delaware Armed Forces Memorial.

EscapeWizard.com recommends visiting the Dover Speedway. It's one of the biggest attractions in the city at least 2 times a year. This is where all the great NASCAR competitors have raced, so if you enjoy the sport, you're sure to enjoy seeing the track.

A trip to Dover isn't complete unless you've visited the Dover Downs. If you're a gambler, EscapeWizard.com guarantees you'll have a good time rolling the dice, playing your chips, or trying your hand at the slots. But we remind all travelers to gamble responsibly.

Whether a Delawarean looking to appreciate your state's rich history, or from out-of-state, you're sure to have a wonderful time in Dover. EscapeWizard.com encourages you to visit Dover, Delaware. Just click the link above and book your next trip with EscapeWizard.com.
