Briefly known as The Conch Republic in 1982, Key West is one of the most visited cities in the United States. This Southernmost location in the country is just 90 miles from Cuba, and packs a lot of punch for only being two miles wide and four miles long. Ask someone who has been to Key West what first comes to mind when they think of the city, and they'll probably answer with either "Duval Street" or "saltwater fishing", but Key West is more than just spirits and swordfish.

Booking your trip to Key West is easy through EscapeWizard.com. Key West has its own airport, Key West International Airport (EYW), and is only 160 miles from Miami International Airport (MIA), or 190 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The drive from either of these two cities down to Key West is a beautiful one, so if your travel plans allow for it, you may consider flying into FLL or MIA and renting a car to continue the rest of the trip. The fun begins immediately upon arrival in Key West, whether you're looking to get right to bar-hopping or spend an afternoon exploring the attractions. Since the island is rich in history, there are a number of exciting museums and places of interest. EscapeWizard.com recommends taking a tour of Earnest Hemingway's house for a glimpse into the author's interesting past, and to play some of the approximately 60 cats living on the grounds. Nearby the Hemingway House, the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a family-fun activity where visitors walk through an amazing living showcase of thousands of butterflies. Additional must-see spots include the Key West Shipwreck Historeum, Lighthouse Museum (climb all 88 steps!), and Pat Croce's Pirate Soul Museum.

As you may have gathered, Key West is a drinker’s paradise. With over 200 bars and restaurants on the island, there is no shortage of watering holes. EscapeWizard.com certainly encourages responsible enjoyment, and doing so on Duval Street is a must. This busy strip is home to the infamous Sloppy Joe's Bar, where Hemingway himself used to spend much of his time. Duval is also host to numerous celebrations and festivals throughout the year, although the people-watching here is prime, regardless of scheduled activity.

Also spectacular in Key West is the plentiful fishing. There are some 225 species of game fish that inhabit the beautiful waters surrounding the Keys, and there are fishing charters aplenty for those hoping to catch the next big one. Whether you prefer flats fishing, light tackle fishing, or deep sea offshore expeditions, you'll find the opportunity here. For those looking to get on the water but perhaps not to catch the things in it; there are breathtaking sunset cruises, Jet Ski rentals, snorkeling, and even parasailing available.

EscapeWizard.com knows that sometimes vacations need a little downtime, and Key West can give you that too. A variety of unique shops and boutiques await shoppers, or one of Key West’s cozy beaches can complete that island getaway feel. Fort Zachary Taylor is home to one of the island's best beaches, and is accessible to the public for cost of admission. Higg's Beach hosts the White Street Pier, which allows fishing and has restrooms within walking distance. South Beach is a favorite of the locals with shallow water and ample sand, or you can always explore the other beaches of Key West and pick your own favorite!

So whether you're looking for a place to let loose and get crazy or an ocean-bound oasis for relaxing and slowing down a bit, Key West is an ideal vacation spot. Let EscapeWizard.com help you plan your Florida vacation, and find out for yourself what the Key West hype is all about.
