Taking in some of the best sights of Lisbon can be done simply by wandering the city streets. Lisbon is rich in beautiful architecture, and examples of buildings from numerous artistic periods can be found throughout the city. Admire structures from Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Post-Modern times; just to name a few. EscapeWizard.com also recommends touring some of Lisbon's fascinating museums. Popular venues include the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Lisbon Oceanarium, the Electricity Museum, the National Coach Museum, and the Berardo Collection Museum showcasing modern art. With centuries of history, Lisbon has a long story to tell, so the city's museum selection is quite vast!

As with many large cities, Lisbon is comprised of a number of districts. Each district offers its own piece of the Lisbon puzzle. Alcantara has a history of being an industrial area, but today features a number of pubs and other watering holes, among a rise in the construction of loft and apartment developments.

The district of Alfama is the oldest in Lisbon, and contains many of the city's historical attractions. Alfama is also a great place to great a bite to eat if you're looking to immerse yourself in Portugese culture. Fado is a popular music genre for the country, and is embraced in the bars and restaurants of Alfama. EscapeWizard.com suggests touring the Castle of Sao Jorge while you're in the area. This castle is one of Lisbon's biggest tourist and historical sites, and is not to be missed!

Continuing on, if you're looking for shopping opportunities or a bustling nightlife, the district of Bairro Alto is your spot. With a continuous blend of locals and tourists, Bairro Alto is a great place to meet new friends or simply unwind after a long day exploring the city. Also good to know for dining and sightseeing purposes, the downtown district of Baixa is another hotspot. Commerce Square and Rossio Square are located here in Baixa, which EscapeWizard.com knows are two of Lisbon's most historically imporant squares.

Next, we move along to the parish of Belem, which is located just four miles west of the center of Lisbon. Belem is another of the city's historical icons, famous for the the tower known as Torre de Belem and Jeronimos Monastery. Several of Lisbon's museums are located here in Belem, so you'll likely find yourself in the district by default through your visits to well-known venues.

Finally, we have Chiado, Lisbon's traditional shopping district. EscapeWizard.com suggests cozying into a Chiado cafe for a great cup of coffee, or wandering the popular streets of Carmo and Garrett to seek out the perfect Lisbon souvenir. Chiado also features several of the city's theatres and museums, and is frequented by locals and tourists alike.

With such an impressive history and so many great things to see, Lisbon is truly an ultimate travel destination. EscapeWizard.com would love to help you plan your Portugal vacation so you can experience this amazing city firsthand!
