Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar square are just a few of the names synonymous with London United Kingdom. There are, quite literally, hundreds of places to visit and each one has a brilliant, awe inspiring, tale to tell. However, with so many wonderful and historical sites to visit it’s almost impossible to narrow the list down. Perhaps I can help you out with a few of my favorite sites that keep me coming back for more.
EscapeWizard.com invites you to book your next vacation to London. The city can be frequented through Heathrow International Airport (LHR) or London Gatwick Airport (LGW), by following this link (www.escapewizard.com/flight.php). Winston Churchill's War Rooms, located a few blocks away from number 10 Downing Street (home to the Prime Minister of England), is a gloriously preserved reminder of the tragedy and victory of World War II. Walking down the steps you feel like you are traveling back time. These are the halls Winston Churchill and the War Cabinet walked down to make decisions that would bring down those bent on the destruction of Europe. These are the rooms that men and women took shelter in while the Nazi’s dropped bombs on London during the Blitz. With the audio tour to guide you, you will hear stories of bravery, stamina and heart break. Walk through the museum and get a feel for what life was like for far too many during the momentous battles.
On the lighter side, The Globe Theatre is home to one of England’s most notable figures: William Shake-speare. While the theatre you see on the South Bank is not the original it is still a magnificent reproduc-tion that has been lovingly restored to the Bards original dream. When you walk through the theatre you are seeing a replica of what was there in the 1500’s. In the spring and summer, you can watch Shake-speare’s plays performed like they were intended, under an open ceiling. The tour takes about 40 minutes and there is a museum that will give you some of the scandalous tales of this Elizabethan theatre.
Since it was built over 900 years ago, The Tower of London has been used as a royal palace, a prison, an armory and, believe it or not, a zoo. I think it’s safe to say that if the stones of this mighty fortress could talk then they would have some pretty dark and dirty secrets to tell. Ann Boleyn was executed on the Tower Green, and Catherine Howard’s ghost still pleads for her life on these same grounds. Of course, the tower does have a brighter attraction: The Crown Jewels are on display in all their brilliant glory. Crowns worn by Kings and Queens are on display and that includes the current monarch’s famous garbs. The Tower of London is so full of hot spots to explore that EscapeWizard.com recommends leaving an entire day or, at the very least, half a day to fully enjoy it all.
Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece, St. Paul’s Cathedral, has become the symbolic heart of London. Completed the 1700’s, the Cathedral has faced the passing of time and the London Blitz. Just like the people of London, you can’t keep this cathedral down, no matter what you throw at it. Of course, the most iconic feature of St. Paul’s is the massive dome. Rising 365 feet above the City of London, it is one of the world’s largest domes. Staring up at the dome from the inside has to be one of the most awe inspiring views created by man. Exquisite mosaics painted but Sir James Thornhill depicts the life of St. Paul in bright golds, reds and other glorious colors that will leave you speechless. Go ahead and take a moment to simply stare at the wondrous creation.
It doesn’t matter how many times you visit this city, there will always be something new to discover. Lon-don is magic, electric, eclectic and positively addictive. You can, literally, spend a life time exploring Lon-donk and never, ever, get bored. Don’t waste a single moment! Book you flights, hotels and whatever else you need right now through EscapeWizard.com.
