Montgomery, Alabama has been the sight of a number of historical events for the state and the country. The state capitol of Alabama also served as the first Capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War. This is where Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a public bus, spurring the Civil Rights Movement forward with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Situated in the middle of the state, the temperate southern climate makes Montgomery an enjoyable place to visit year round.

We suggest starting your tour at the State House. In 1960, the building was named a National Historic Landmark. Today the building serves as the seat of legislature for the state of Alabama. The architecture is in the Greek Revival style and imposing columns usher guests through the front door. Inside is a rotunda with murals that tell the story of Alabama's history. In 1961, the capitol was also the Capitol of the Confederacy. A six-pointed star marks the spot where Jefferson Davis took his oath of office as the first, and only, President of the Confederacy. A tour of the capitol offers visitors the chance to learn more about Alabama, and the nation's history.

EscapeWizard.com recommends visiting Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, another National Historical Landmark. It sits two blocks away from the State House and is one of the important landmarks of the Civil Rights movement. It is here where the Montgomery Bus Boycott, ignited by Rosa Parks' refusal to move from her seat on the bus, first found legs. Dexter Avenue Baptist Church was the church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached his messages of civil equality. After the boycott, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was propelled to the national stage as a Civil Rights leader. EscapeWizard.com also recommends scheduling a tour of the Dexter Parsonage Museum which gives a detailed look at the Civil Rights movement.

The Civil Rights Memorial Center is only a couple blocks away from the church and parsonage and is an excellent way to spend an afternoon learning more about the Civil Rights movement. EscapeWizard.com recommends exploring a trip to the Center. A theatre and educational center provide a wealth of information for those looking to learn more. Another great place to learn about the Civil Rights movement is the Rosa Parks Museum on Montgomery Street. This museum allows visitors to learn about this revolutionary woman’s live and the history of Civil Rights.

EscapeWizard.com recommends enjoying some of Montgomery's cultural venues as well. A trip to Blount Cultural Park is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and year round visitors can enjoy the Shakespeare Garden, which features plants that Shakespeare wrote about in his plays. Enjoy the array of violas, marigolds, and roses -- and walk among the beautiful canopy of trees.

No night out in Montgomery is complete without a stop by the Alley Entertainment District. This area is full of restaurant and shops all in close proximity to one another. Enjoy food at one of the numerous restaurants offering a variety of cuisine. EscapeWizard.com suggests seeking out some down home southern food while you're visiting.
