The city was first settled in 1621 but the name “Newportes Newes” first appeared in records in 1619, one of the oldest remaining place names of the new world. No one is sure exactly where the name comes from, but the generally accepted story is that it was named for Christopher Newport, captain of the flagship that first landed on Jamestown Island. Today, there are a number of museums, art galleries, and historical memorials located in Newport News. The city also boasts stunning scenery and amazing outdoor adventures for you to explore.

From April to November visitors are invited to use the James River Fishing Pier, one of the longest fishing piers on the east coast. At over half a mile in length, the pier has a bait and tackle shop on site and no permit is required to try your hand at catching some trout or bass. Fishing opportunities are also available in King Lincoln Park. This park, which features an outdoor stage where many special events and concerts are held, also has picnicking grounds and jungle gyms. Tennis and basketball facilities are available to the public as well.

Newport News has been an important location throughout American history. Prior to the civil war it was a plantation and fishing area but afterward it became home to the world’s largest shipbuilding company and a considerable stretch of the C&O Railway, which was originally used to transport coal to the east. During the war Newport News was home to some of the most famous maritime battles in US history, including the first ironclad battle of the war. The beautiful and historic North End is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register as well as the highly prestigious National Register of Historic Places. In the Lee Hall area of the city, well preserved remnants of The Great War and World War II are evident.  During those times the city served as a home base for many US Soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Eustis. The Lee Hall neighborhood is also a great attraction for railroad enthusiasts. Downtown, a Victory Arch still stands commemorating the soldiers who served in the Great War.

Serious Military buffs and families alike will enjoy a visit to The James River Reserve Fleet and The Virginia War Museum. The James River reserve Fleet, or “Ghost Fleet”, is an awe-inspiring sight. The fleet of over 100 retired merchant and navy ships has ships that once served in the transportation of aircrafts, cargo, rescue equipment, US troops, and all kinds of weaponry during war. The Virginia War Museum is home to an astounding collection of wartime artifacts and period memorabilia. Their collection, which includes pieces dating from 1775 to the present, is an impressive and eclectic mix of uniforms, vehicles, weapons, period posters, and more.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation Newport News is a fantastic place to go. Let EscapeWizard.com help you get your trip started today!
