Louisville is rich in history. It was founded at the Falls of the Ohio in 1778 by George Rogers Clark, initially as a Revolutionary War fort. The Falls, which create a 26 foot drop in river elevation, is composed of one of the largest exposed fossilized coral reefs in the world. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the 1803 journey to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, also began at the Falls.

Louisville is also a city that loves its performing arts, boasting not only a full-time orchestra, opera and ballet, but also a regional theater and children's theater. recommends checking out the area’s numerous museums and attractions, including the world famous Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Frazier International History Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Science Center, and the J.B. Speed Art Museum, as well as the Louisville Zoo.

Sports fans can attend University of Louisville athletic events or watch the Louisville Bats, an AAA baseball team, play at Slugger Field. The Louisville Extreme Park, a renowned skate park, offers another change of pace. And for the golfers, Louisville has many courses available for play, most notably the Valhalla Golf Club, which has hosted several PGA events, including the 2008 Ryder Cup.

After enjoying the many attractions available around Louisville, suggests enjoying dinner at one of the area’s many original restaurants, featuring cuisine from around the world. To wind down your evening – or to get it started – you can stop by the downtown bars, including 21C with its famous bathrooms; Louisville’s 4th Street Live! a huge entertainment complex with dance clubs, bars and restaurants or, for a more relaxed night scene, the Highlands area with local eateries, bars and pubs.

If you want a more relaxed trip, the newly remodeled Waterfront Park provides a scenic view of the Ohio River, with walking/biking paths, fountains, and statues. Louisville offers over 120 parks. In 2005, the City of Parks initiative began, which includes plans for a 100+ mile Louisville Loop Trail connecting the area parks, several dog parks, and numerous upgrades.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail kicks off just outside of the city, with tours of several local distilleries, providing a glimpse into Kentucky’s past.  The Bourbon Festival, held in September, also showcases the region’s famous spirits.  Other events, like the St. James Art Festival in early October, which offers visitors an opportunity to view and purchase local area crafts, and “Light Up Louisville,” held the day after Thanksgiving, let visitors see the city at its finest.

Of course, if you can arrange it, recommends scheduling your trip during the end of April. The city comes alive during the Kentucky Derby Festival – a two week period kicking off with “Thunder Over Louisville”, the world’s largest fireworks display and accompanying military air show. The Festival continues with events like the Great Balloon Race, the Steamboat Race, and the Kentucky Derby Parade. Local bands play at the Chow Wagons nightly, where the food is plentiful and the atmosphere is fun, and the horses are running at Churchill Downs, where visitors can bet the ponies and visit the on-site museum.

The Festival culminates with the running of the Kentucky Derby, the most famous two minutes in sports history, and the first race of the illustrious Triple Crown of horse racing. recommends visiting Louisville for its rich heritage and activities suitable for every interest and budget.
