Mansfield Ohio is the largest city in the Mid- Ohio Region. The city is located 80 miles South West of Cleveland and 66 miles North East of Columbus. The city, known by the nicknames of the “Carousel Capital of Ohio” and the “Racing Capital of Ohio” is small but still has plenty to offer for vacationers of all types.

Several well known movies used Mansfield and the surrounding area as their backdrop. Air Force One and Tango and Cash are two well known movies shot in Mansfield. But the highlight would definitely be The Shawshank Redemption. Although this story was set in Maine, the Mansfield Reformatory was the prison used to shoot the film. Vacationers can see the site where Tim Robbins’s character, Andy Dufresne, made his daring escape in one of the most loved films of all time.

The Miss Ohio pageant is held each year in downtown’s Renaissance Theatre.  The theatre is located at 136 Park Avenue West and is also host to the Mansfield Symphony, the Renaissance Broadway Series, the Renaissance Summer Musical, the Third Saturday in August Comedy Club, the Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra and Youth Strings, to name a few of the events found in this 80 year old theatre. highly recommends this venue to vacationers visiting the city.

Mansfield has several great museums but one of the best, and’s top selection is the Mansfield Memorial Museum .You can find this museum at 34 Park Avenue West in the downtown area. This museum was opened as a memorial to all Soldiers and Sailors that have/had served in the US Armed Services.  Now, it houses exhibitions from Roman time to modern time. Exhibitions range from displays on African live, Native American life, natural history and of course displays of Military Life.  One of the exhibits is the robot ELECKTRO, built by the Westinghouse Electric Co. for the 1939 New York’s World’s Fair.

As mentioned above Mansfield is known by several nicknames. One of the nicknames is the “Carousel Capital.” The Richland Carousel Park, which has many fine examples of carousel memorabilia, is located in the downtown area at 75 North Main Street. “Racing Capital of Ohio,” is another nickname. Closer to Lexington, Ohio, Southeast of Mansfield is the “Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.”  This is a road course for Indy style racing cars, AMA Motorcycle Racing and road course sports cars. If you ever wanted to drive on an actual race course or just to experience the thrill.  Mid Ohio sponsors a driving school.  Some of the classes offered are defensive driving, high performance driving, and motorcycles.

The Richland County Fair is held in Mansfield every August. Many restaurants are known for their homemade apple pie.  After all ‘Jonny Appleseed’ an American conservationist created several large orchards throughout Ohio and in the Mansfield area. ’Jonny Appleseed’ as he was known, born John Chapman, was said to be the first nurseryman in the US.
