As the capital of South Dakota, Pierre offers a rich history and a plethora of memorials, monuments and museums. The Capitol grounds feature 115-acres of beautifully landscaped grounds as well as a five-acre Capitol Lake. Several monuments and memorials are situated around the lake.

Also a beautiful piece of sculpting, the Fighting Stallions Memorial honors eight South Dakotans, including Governor George Mickelson, who died in a plane crash in 1993. recommends that you visit the state’s World War II memorial located on a peninsula built into Lake Capitol.
