This fort was built in 1680 to defend the Danish settlement. Over the centuries this lovely landmark has served as the governor’s residence, a place of worship, a police station, a court and is currently serving as a museum. Fort Christian and Museum is the oldest building in continuous use on the island of Saint Thomas and boasts artifacts and artwork from the Danish period. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop for souvenirs, books, and local crafts. 

The next stop would suggest would be the famous 99 steps of Saint Thomas. The steps were constructed out of ballasts of Danish trading ships in the 1700’s. They are not steep and make a worthwhile climb for amazing views of the island. On your way up the steps you will pass historic sites of interest such as Haagensen House and Villa Notman. You can also reach Blackbeard’s Castle by climbing the 99 steps. Constructed in 1679, Blackbeard’s castle was originally built as a watchtower overlooking Charlotte Amalie harbor. Climb to the top of the tower for breathtaking views across the harbor. There is also a bar and snack shop on the grounds for a nice break and refreshments.
